Hoverfly

Syrphus ribesii

These bee mimics are master gardeners, with adults feeding on nectar while their larvae consume hundreds of aphids per day. They’re incredible aerial acrobats, able to hover motionless before darting away at high speed. Many species have intricate patterns that perfectly mimic wasps or bees, despite being completely harmless flies. They’re among the most important pollinators after bees, visiting flowers throughout the day. Some species migrate thousands of miles, rivaling butterflies in their epic journeys. Their larvae are so effective at pest control that they’re commercially bred for organic farming.
