Lapwing

Vanellus vanellus

Lapwings are one of the most distinctive and beautiful waders in the UK, known for their iridescent plumage and acrobatic “peewit” display flight. While resident populations breed here, you are much more likely to see them during the winter months. This is because the UK becomes a vital wintering ground for large numbers of Lapwings migrating from colder parts of continental Europe, swelling their populations. They gather in large flocks on open farmland, wetlands, and estuaries, making them more conspicuous as they forage for invertebrates in the softer, often waterlogged ground. Their presence is a vibrant addition to the UK’s winter birdlife.
