Red Fox

Vulpes vulpes

Red foxes are a common sight in the UK countryside and even urban areas, and unlike some other mammals, they do not hibernate. This means they remain active and visible throughout the winter months, foraging for food in the snow and cold. Their thick winter coat provides insulation against the chill. The colder months also mark a significant period in their reproductive cycle, as foxes typically mate in January and February. After a gestation period of around 52 days, cubs are usually born in March. Red foxes are highly adaptable and play a crucial role as predators in their ecosystems, helping to control populations of small mammals.
