Shield Bug
Rhaphigaster nebulosa
These armored insects become more noticeable in autumn as they seek sheltered spots to overwinter, often found on late-flowering plants. They feed on plant juices using their needle-like mouthparts, but most species cause little damage. Green shield bugs are masters of camouflage, changing color from bright green to bronze as autumn progresses. They’re also called “stink bugs” because they release a pungent odor when threatened. Some species are actually beneficial, preying on pest insects. They communicate through vibrations transmitted through plant stems.
